MOS is a post-denominational collaboration among Rabbi Sherril Gilbert, Cantor Heather Batchelor and Rabbi Schachar Orenstein dedicated to creating and celebrating innovative and inclusive opportunities for contemplative and experiential Jewish practice, life cycle rituals, learning, community building, and social change.
Not bound by a particular location, we meet in yoga studios, cafés, synagogues, homes, event venues and other religiously unconventional spaces all around the city, bringing joy, spirit, song and celebration to places without a Jewish institutional presence.
Inspired by the untapped, innovative potential in the greater Montreal Jewish community, the three of us got together in early 2018 to explore opportunities for collaboration. Driven by our rich and varied backgrounds, our desire to serve, the synergy among the three of us, and contemporary movements in Jewish spirituality, Montreal Open Shul was born. We began by offering a creative array of Shabbat services and programming at an NDG yoga studio (which we filled to capacity), including Shabbat Totally Unplugged, and Embracing the Beloved Shabbat. We welcome the unaffiliated, as well as those looking to enrich their current Jewish experience and practices.
